Helping students use L2 (English) in pairwork/group

Getting to grips with groupwork in Thanh Hoa

Why use group and pairwork ?

• It greatly increases the amount of time students can talk in class, especially in larger classes.

• It creates a need to communicate and an exchange between people.

• It encourages a better atmosphere in the class.

• It helps students feel confident in using the language.

• Students learn by doing things for themselves and this provides an opportunity for them to do so.

• It ensures students are working while the teacher works with a certain group/pair.

• It creates opportunities for students to practise using English.

How can we provide appropriate support for pairwork/ groupwork?

We cannot help students with everything, but we can provide them some kinds of assistance:
1. make sure you arouse students' interest in the activity by providing a motivating leading. 2. make sure students have got the language they need to do the task so try and predict the words and language students will need to do the activity both vocabulary and functional language, and provide language prompts or even models to help them to carry out an activity.
4. be sure of your aims and give clear instructions.
5. try to use classroom language as much as possible to create an English speaking atmosphere. You may also need to adjust your speed and volume and should repeat or rephrase to help students.
6. give students a clear and understandable purpose for doing the activities and always remember to set a time limit.
7. remember to move around to facilitate students with language or general knowledge and to ensure that they are on task.
8. know how you are going to correct. You should know your aims and whether you are going to ignore errors, deal with the main ones or sometimes even try and correct them all. You also should take advantage of your students to self correct or peer correct.
9. don't forget to provide feedback. You should always provide feedback to the class as a whole and remember that praise and encouragement are important.
