Adapting textbooks to encourage           communication

When choosing and adapting any activity or task from a text box, it is important that the teacher provides appropriate support for pair and group work so that the communication, and therefore the task, is successful. Here is an example of what and how support is provided to help studenhs do textbook activities successfully. The tasts are taken from Tieng Anh 10 (NXB GIAO DUC).

1. Elicit different types of film from students.
2. Pre-teach the names of the films in the table, if necessary.
3. Ask students to look at the first kind of film Science fiction and then listen to the teacher's sentence: I don't like science fiction at all.
4. Get students to look at the first row and ask them where to put a tick. Then put the tick in the "Not at all" column.
5. Get one student to make another sentence with horror. Then ask him/her where to tick.
6. Let students do the task individually.

7. Check if students understand the different types of film and the adjectives. Pre-teach if necessary.
8. Conduct a mini substitution drill to practise
I find + O +  adj
Example:       T: interesting
                    Ss: I find them interesting.

9. Get students to do pairwork to practise showing agreement using "Me.,too."
Example:       S1: I find detective films boring.
                     S2: Me,too. I find thrillers exciting.
                     S1: Me, too.
10. Work with three other students and demonstrate the model conversation.
T: What do you think of horror films?
S1: Oh, I find them quite disgusting.
S2: I don't quite agree with you. I find them interesting.
S3: Me, too. What do you think of thrillers?.

11. Get students into groups of four and practise.
12. Tell students to copy the table onto a piece of paper.

13. Explain that every time they know a type of film is preferred, put a tick in the second column.
14. Demonstrate the model dialogue with a strong student.
15. Get students to move around and talk.
