Creativity in English language teaching

The atmosphere was truly buzzing with enthusiasm and excitement at the 3rd National VTTN ELT Conference in Hanoi on the 8 and 9 December 2005 as almost 450 teachers, trainers and managers from schools, universities and Departments of Education and Training from Vietnam and the region gathered to talk, meet, share ideas and network.

We had a huge number of provinces represented ( 51), allowing new ideas in English language teaching methodology to reach even more teachers around the country. 14 countries participated in the conference as speakers or delegates. Out of the 68 speakers, encouragingly 41 were Vietnamese with 15 VTTN trainers and 5 Hornby Trust Scholars. This is a fantastic reflection of how all of you in VTTN are working hard to build the training capacity of the 100 trainers around the country, as well as teachers. As one teacher put it “ the commitment of the VTTN participants and speakers was impressive”.

The conference addressed the challenge of creativity in the classroom for motivation, effective learning and meaningful communication. The keynote speakers Alan Maley and Carolyn Graham, who was sponsored by OUP, did a wonderful job of raising our awareness about new ideas and how to implement these creative ideas into lessons.

So a very big ‘thank you’ to everyone involved in the organisation, delivery and smooth running of the event.

And remember to get your ‘call for papers’ in by 22 September for the 4th National VTTN Conference on 8 and 9 December 2006 in Hanoi. The deadline for registration for participants is 2 October 2006.

The highlight for two of our VTTN trainers was winning the prize draw for the Pilgrims and NILE Teacher Training courses in the UK. Tran Thi Anh Nguyet, from Phu Tho and Ngo Thi Xuan Hoa, from Yen Bai, will be flying off to the UK for two weeks in July. We wish them a safe journey and hope they find their courses both professionally rewarding and enjoyable.
