Learning teaching
in the UK
Dang Anh Hieu
from
Tran Nhan Tong Upper Secondary
School
in Hanoi was the lucky
winner of a two-week intensive
Teacher Development Course at Marjon International, Plymouth,
Britain.
….you cannot make someone learn, you can only create the conditions for that person to learn.
The course, which Hieu attended in July, consisted of
Methodology, Language Awareness, Classroom Action
Research and Materials Analysis and Design. The 'thought
provoking' sessions were directly focused on classroom
needs and he says were, 'really useful for practising
teachers such as me.' The atmosphere was 'friendly and
supportive' and strengthened Hieu's belief in the
philosophy that, 'you cannot make someone learn, you
can only create the conditions for that person to learn.'

We are happy to welcome back Phung Canh Thanh who was last year's Hornby Trust Scholarship awardee. Thanh spent a year at Leeds University doing an MA in International Educational Management. Highlights of his trip included:
- excellent tutoring on the course which promoted independent learning
- a 22-day trip around Europe
- attending the IATEFL conference
- attending workshops in Oxford

Thanh says, 'As much as I enjoyed UK life, I am at heart attracted to
café Saigon and mien ngan Hanoi. I am home now, passing on what I
have learnt to my students and colleagues and applying it to my work.'

Tran Thi Lan
from
Hanoi University
won a twoweek
training course in Norwich, England. The
course at the Norwich Institute for Language
Learning (NILE) provided her, she says, 'with a sound
knowledge of how to conduct teacher training
courses, how to make best use of classroom
observations, how to bring literature into a language
classroom, and valuable exposure to British culture.'
She and her colleagues
were very pleased to have
lecturers with such a deep
knowledge as Rod Bolitho
and Jeremy Harmer (some
of you will have seen them
at conferences here in
Vietnam).
…..the high level of
the participants, the
warm atmosphere
within the
multicultural group,
the creativity of the
trainers
Lan studying in a ‘busy, messy, happy class’
She described the two weeks as 'hectic', the other
participants as 'resourceful but never competitive',
her home stay as 'wonderful', her landlady as 'kindhearted'
and the people of Norwich as 'hospitable
and charming'. But most importantly, she says she
was very impressed with, 'the high level of the
participants, the warm atmosphere within the
multicultural group, the creativity of the trainers,
and even the exciting stories told in teaching
literature classes.'
'I understand how important it is for a language teacher
to attend regular refreshment courses especially after a
long interruption from formal professional training,' she
says.
