Dear readers
It is with great pleasure and some sadness that I welcome
you to the 15th and final edition of English Now.
After 8 years of working towards positive change in
English language teaching, Vietnam’s English Teacher and
Training Network (VTTN) will conclude with the 5th
National VTTN conference in January 2009. Over the past
8 years more than 9 500 teachers have taken part in over
250 workshops in 20 provinces. This is a remarkable
achievement.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the VTTN
trainers for all of the hard work that has gone into
preparing and delivering the workshops which have
covered a diverse range of themes such as teaching the
four skills, assessment, developing vocabulary and
motivating students. I would also like to thank the
Ministry of Education and Training and the Departments
of Education and Training who have worked in
partnership with the British Council to make VTTN
possible, as well as all of the many teachers who have
participated in the workshops. Finally, I would like to
acknowledge the invaluable contributions of my
predecessors, Brian Stott and Laura Grassick, and their
dedication to this important project.
In this final issue of English Now we have included many
of the ideas from the last VTTN workshop on Teaching
Speaking. You will find useful tips on how to adapt
speaking lessons from Tieng Anh, common problems
teachers face when teaching speaking and some realistic
solutions, and examples of controlled and less controlled
speaking activities.
Other features in this issue include VTTN news, Dear
Language Doctor and information on the new British
Council Five Lessons DVD / Teacher Training Pack. And
while we are very sad to be wrapping up VTTN, on a more
positive note this issue contains articles about 2 exciting
new British Council projects: Classroom Language and
Primary Innovations.
Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to Bao Kham
and Lam Son who have worked with Aidan Pelly to put this
magazine together, and a final thank you to all of you for
your continued support.
