Introduction
I n December, VTTN held the yearly planning meeting involving key members
from all the provinces in the network. The participants were the teachers,
co-trainers and co-ordinators responsible for planning and running the
provincial workshops in 2001. Their hard work resulted in the successful
series of workshops held in seven provinces on "Designing and Using
Lesson Plans for English 10,11 & 12".
This meeting was followed by a two-day trainer training workshop. The
aim of this workshop was to develop training skills in VTTN team members
who co-train in provincial workshops. Trainer training is important for
the network because it increases the effectiveness of future workshops,
provides an opportunity for Vietnamese teachers o become trainers and
develops Vietnamese talent in ELT.
Together we will make things happens
The national VTTN Planning Meeting and Trainer Training Workshop held
in Hanoi on the very last days of 2000 is still in my mind as a very good
memory and has made a real difference in my beloved career. This was the
first time I had ever attended such a workshop. There was no lecturing,
but through demonstrating, together we found how to conduct provincial
workshops effectively. The feedback was very positive since all the aims
of the workshop were achieved. We especially put a lot of thought into
how to strengthen the network. Back in Khanh Hoa after the workshop, we
confidently and eagerly prepared the provincial workshop. We hope it was
a true reflection of what we learned in the national workshop, resulting
in better teaching for every teacher of English in my province. Together
we will make things different, together we will make things happen!

After running the provincial workshop: Reflections of a co-trainer
A Ithough I have learned about teacher training, this was the first time
I had actually worked as a co-trainer in a workshop like this. I have
realised that being a workshop co-trainer is a tough, but interesting
job, as you have to learn to do things properly. You should not only be
confident enough to speak in front of your fellow teachers, but also clear
enough in giving instructions to make yourself understood while giving
input, taking feedback and monitoring pair/group work. Right from the
beginning of the workshop, I knew that I wasn't any good at speaking in
front of people who were not my students. Therefore, to make sure things
went well, I had to write down what I would say, including instructions,
which I never did with my students before. This is how I learned that
clear instructions are vefy important. I also had to think about how to
give feedback in an encouraging way so as to help participants feel free
to give ideas. The workshop plan was another difficult thing that I had
to try my best to write; and although it needed to be modified a little,
it was completed and considered good. I was especially overwhelmed by
the participants' enthusiasm and involvement in the workshop activities.
Teachers of English in Nghe An Province have been isolated from the outside
world for a long time, and they had previously had no chance to share
ideas and experiences in teaching; this workshop helped them to do some
of those things and this makes me feel VTTN broken the ice.
