Grammar Teaching Activities

The next pages contain ideas for teaching grammar. Some activities can be used to present new language, some to practise and some can be used for both. Most of these activities can be adapted for use with a wide range of grammar points. We hope you enjoy reading about these activities and we hope you and your students enjoy using them in class.
Comparative Circle
Put students into groups of four or five. Give each group a set of words written on large pieces of paper or card. Ask students to put the words in a circle like this:

Students take it in turns to connect two words by making a comparison:
eg A Honda is faster than a bicycle.
A tiger is more endangered than a dog.
A rose smells nicer than a shoe.
Ask some groups to share their comparisons with the class.

Making connections between sets of randomly chosen words can be a great way to help students to memorise and internalise language. Comparatives are the focus here. Also a good activity for recycling vocabulary.
