Delivering ÔQualityÕ in ELT.

Firstly, on behalf of the British Council, huge thanks to all those involved in the creation, organisation and smooth running of such a high profile event as this. Over 40 speakers from 10 different countries (including a wealth of Vietnamese experts and practitioners) delivered some 50 presentations, workshops and seminars over the two days. What's more, over 300 participants flocked to the ÔHorison hotelÕ Hanoi in order to attend, arriving from just about every province in Vietnam. Further proof that the VTTN is continuing to flourish into an even more vibrant and professional network!

Apologies must go to speakers and presenters not represented in this issue, especially our eminent plenary speakers Hanna Kryszewska and Dr. Richard Day. This is due to the fact that we simply do not have enough space in this magazine to include everybody! We have, however, provided you with a partial list of speakersÕ contact addresses together with their session titles. So, if your appetite has been whetted, and you would like to find out more, contact us here at the British Council vttn@britishcouncil.org.vn for the full list of sessions.

What follows is a small selection of practical sessions delivered at the conference. We certainly hope you find them useful.
Enjoy!

Our second international caonference was a roaring success, delight springing from both the quality of the presentations and the enthusiasm and commitment of those who attended. Responses to the conference have been overwhelmingly positive, but donÕt take our word for it, here are just a handful of comments we received from participants flying the VTTN flag.

Successful and inspiring! I hope we can have more soon! ÒIt was an honour and a pleasure to be a part of the first ever VTTN ELT Conference. I was surprised with the level of professionalism of the teachers that I met.

Magnificent job guys! Very well done and thank you!

Well Done! Great presentations and well-equipped rooms. Nice variety of useful topics covered!

The conference was very rich and well-qualified in terms of delivery content and topics. So many good things going on!

It was great to see how eager the participants were in learning new things and sharing experiences with their colleagues!

We look forward to seeing you all again this December for the second National Conference in Ho Chi Minh City.

HOW TO MAKE ENGLISH COME ALIVE IN SECONDARY SCHOOL?

'If I tell it to you, youÕll remember for a day.
If I show it to you, youÕll remember for a week.
If you do it, youÕll remember it forever.'

We, teachers and students of Trung Vuong secondary school in Hanoi would like to
tell you some simple truths about how to create an environment for students to
improve their English.

Rationale
It seems that merely spoon-feeding grammar and new words are inadequate. The
required syllabus should go hand in hand with fun and task-based communicative
activities. In this way not only will the students master the core curriculum more
easily, but they have also come to enjoy the subject they love.

The Topics

1. Ho Thu Trang:

HOLDING A PARTY
Getting ideas and discussing with teachers
We need a detailed plan
Making a frame (who is who? roles, language needed)
Rehearsing (getting it right)
Getting the Party started (activities in action)

A Party needs:
Music (with a tape-player and some tapes)
Songs and dances (songsheets)
Games (Students brainstorm, they are millionaires of these)
Fashion shows/competitions (Kids love these)
Dramas (Role-plays of the party in class, give characters)

2. Tran Huong Linh:

MAKING A NEWSLETTER 'ENGLISH WOW!'
We offer whatever teenagers want.

Editorial Board: English teacher and students themselves, maybe with parentsÔ help
Brainstorm contents needed and allocate tasks
News and picture hunters
Arranging & designing group
All studentsÕ articles: The most important but difficult job! (collating their work)

MAKING A YEARBOOK
Study corner: What are the secrets of studying English or 'to cheat or not to cheat
in class'?
Teachers, parents and studentsÕ writings: donÕt worry, Mums and Dads, WeÕll help
you to change your Vietnamese writing into English.
Poetry workshop: making and translating poems with prizes for the best ones!
Class Page: descriptions and predictions for the future of members of the class

3. Nguyen Hoang Long:

Editor in chief of Yearbook.
Our schoolÕs tradition is every four years. Students make a
yearbook to bring home all the voices and smiles of teachers and
friends, the arguments, the good times and also the bad times of
their beautiful school years. Every time we open this book, weÕll
see smiling faces and feel like we are among the people we shared
some part of our lives with.

Introduction by English teacher and Editor board and monitor.
Student writings:
About one another
Teachers and parents
Memories at school
Plans for the coming years
Where to go after secondary schoolÉÉ.
